Running a business is tough, and finding the right people to staff it can be even tougher — it can be a daunting task, especially when you have so many more projects to accomplish! Which is a great reason to let us do your staffing for you! At Burnett’s, we dedicate ourselves to providing a smooth, efficient, easy process for businesses; allowing you time to focus on your company’s needs while we focus on acquiring the very best talent to meet your professsional office requirements. Here are some of the ways we do that:

Submit Job Orders Online or By Phone
The Internet is a wonderful tool and we use it to the fullest extent possible! If you’ve got a job to fill, you can simply fill out our job order form online and we’ll get the ball rolling to find the perfect match for you! However, we also know that you can never replace a phone call with a form or an opportunity to talk with you personally. We always provide direct attention the moment you call. Follow this link to contact a representative at one of of our locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area!

Extensive Screening
Between our personal one-on-one interviews with candidates, detailed reference checking, criminal background checks, skill evaluations, and our drug testing, we get to know our candidates well. We can provide you with information on their personality, appearance, attitude, motivation, flexibility, communication, location preferences, and salary requirements. This is the key to making a strong match between our candidates and the businesses who need their experience and skills!

Video Resume
We now offer video resumes. It can save you a great deal of time and money by allowing you to see and hear candidates before setting up a full interview.

Temp-to-Hire Process
For clients who desire it, we offer a great temp-to-hire program so that a business can make sure that an employee works out before going to the expense of bringing them on full time — though they often do so in the end!

Guarantees
Burnett’s GUARANTEES each placement made, whether it’s a temporary, temp-to-hire, or direct hire placement! We stand behind the quality of people we represent and want to make sure that each of our clients are completely satisfied with the job we have done. Regardless of reason, if a candidate we place does not work out we will replace them and apply a special guarantee, depending upon which service has been requested.

This is a general idea of our staffing process, however, we work with businesses to make sure that our services fit their needs perfectly. For more specific details on what Burnett’s can do for you, or if you have an office position to fill— please contact us today. We will be happy to assist you!

One of the terrible catch-22s of the job search cycle is that once you’re out of work, it’s difficult to keep your skills up and learn new ones because you’re spending most of your time looking for new work.

Burnett’s Staffing has a solution to this problem. For the benefit of both our clients and job candidates, Burnett’s offers skill enhancement services to all of our job seekers for free.

These enhancement services include an assessment test that can reveal the weak points in your skill set. After you’ve gone through some of our training, you can also use it to see how much you’ve improved!

Most of the training is available online so that our job seekers can learn whenever they have time from the convenience of their own homes, or even on the go via their laptops. We offer training in a variety of skills that are valuable at any job, such as typing, Microsoft Office suite, data entry, and 10-key typing. We also offer training in office, clerical, and administration skills, customer service, and even some language coaching.

The list of skills we teach is so long we can’t even really fit it into a single blog post! Most of our candidates come in and speak to us, and we plan out a custom set of courses to enhance their existing skills and brush up any rough areas. This helps to ensure that our candidates are at the peak of their potential hire-ability!

If you would like to improve your skills to better your chance at finding a job— and get help finding one, and be eligible for other benefits of working with Burnett’s —call or visit one of our locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex today!

In his book, “Stepping Up: How Taking Responsibility Changes Everything,” John Izzo, Ph.D., puts the emphasis back on the individual to change your own life, especially as it relates to your career.Have you ever thought, “This job would be so much better if my boss would do ABC,” or “If the marketing team would actually help me, I would be able to sell more XYZ?” No matter what the thought, Izzo says that we should ditch the helpless attitude and resolve to do something about it.

According to Izzo’s research, many people wait for the perfect plan to materialize before taking action, and the “sit and wait” method is one of our greatest roadblocks to success. Here are ways you can take control of your career destiny.

Create your ideal solution.

Change often comes from one idea. If you have ideas about how your job could be better, whether it’s by improving a work process or creating efficiencies and reducing costs, share it with your boss. Your ability to show initiative and creativity will only benefit you long term, because you’ll be noticed as an employee who goes above and beyond. If your boss gives you the green light to spearhead a new initiative, rely on her for support and guidance. Ask for input on how to mark milestones or what a realistic deadline for the project would be.

Be open to changes, improvements and feedback.

When you take on a more active role by asking questions and suggesting change, be prepared for some potential negativity. There will always be those people who like the status quo, and they may be afraid you’ll either put them out of a job or require them to take on more work. To entice more collaboration, ask for input or see what ideas others have to improve or possibly alter your original idea. The odds of universal satisfaction may be slim, but being open to group discussion will show you’re working toward the greater good. It’s possible that as you work to improve one process or series of tasks, you may stumble upon more problems. When this happens, determine what workarounds are possible. Be willing to table those insurmountable issues, but alert the project manager of these so the success of the larger project isn’t delayed.

Remember the alternative.

Often when you initiate a change at work or in your personal life, you did it, because you were tired of the present conditions and you want to improve your life or the life of others. Times will get tough, and there will be points where you hit so many walls that you want to give up, but you have to remember the past and think about the alternative. In his book, Izzo says that leadership is not a position. It’s up to an individual to choose to take the reins of a project or task and run with it. Izzo gives these three tips for stepping up:

1. State your intention and write it down. Once it’s written, it’s a commitment for change.

2. Go above your position and weight. Go bigger and try harder than your role commands of you, and know that as you strive to be better, the money will follow.

3. Remember your influence no matter your role. You may not think that you can change anything in your current role, but remember that your voice does count for something. And sometimes all it takes is one person to ignite change.

By Lisa Cook, Director of Career Services for Walden University

With the national unemployment rate in double digits, people lucky enough to be employed are focusing on how to keep their jobs. For some, that means spending longer hours at the office, volunteering for new assignments, or enrolling in continuing education programs to gain additional skills that can add value in their current position.

For others, this is a time of deep, personal reflection about their job choice and career path. Many people are re-evaluating their careers, and they are looking at how they can make a greater impact on the lives of others.

As the director of career services for Walden University, I have been privileged to hear the success stories of hundreds of working professionals who found ways to make a greater difference in their communities. Here are three important lessons they taught me:

1. Expand your current role
The answer to making work more rewarding may be right in front of you. Before switching jobs and companies, first look inside your organization for opportunities to make an impact. With many organizations short-staffed right now, it might be possible to gain experience in a new field and shift careers with your current employer.

One of our public health doctoral students did just that. Julie*, who works in public health for a federal agency, sought projects to lead, and she became involved in two research initiatives outside her usual job description.

She updated her résumé to reflect her newly acquired skills, experiences and education, proving to her supervisor that she was qualified for a higher-level position. As a result of her resourcefulness, Julie received a promotion and a raise.

2. Spearhead a new initiative
Sometimes finding more meaningful work comes from exploring novel ways to use what you already know to make a difference in a new arena.

Maria* was completing a practicum in nursing at a local college. In conversations with the college’s dean, she learned that the curriculum had not yet been developed for the college’s new community health nursing course.

Capitalizing on her 20 years of experience in home health care, Maria offered to develop a syllabus and lesson plan for the course, and she was given the opportunity to do so. Her initiative paid off — the associate dean offered her a faculty position as the community health nurse educator.

3. Share your expertise with colleagues
When I talk to students who are successful in their jobs and their lives, I learn that they often go the extra mile in their professional roles, especially in their interactions with others.

There are plenty of opportunities to make a difference for individuals within your organization. Newer staff members need more experienced advisers to help them navigate difficult work scenarios or simply to grab lunch with them once in awhile.

Co-workers in other departments may be looking to better understand the work you do — and these connections will help strengthen ties between individuals and work groups within your company.

Check with your human resources department to see if you can sign up for a mentoring program, or simply invite a junior employee to lunch. Sometimes there is no greater reward than helping someone else succeed.

Now is a vital time to find ways to make current jobs more fulfilling, while also building skills for future achievement.

5 interview attire don’ts

If you’re headed to an employment interview and want to dress to impress, don’t wear a cat suit, a jogging suit or “Star Trek” T-shirt. These were among the strangest interview outfits cited by human resources managers recently polled by Robert Half International.

You may think to yourself, “I’d never wear anything that crazy!” But even subtle mistakes when it comes to your wardrobe can damage your chances of landing the job you seek. Here are some interview attire no-nos:

Don’t take casual to the extreme. Take a lesson from the job seeker who made the mistake of wearing sweatpants to an interview: You will not be taken seriously if you look like you just strolled in from the gym.

Even if a company has a very laid-back atmosphere, maintaining a professional look is essential. It provides instant credibility and signals to the interviewer that you take the position seriously. If you’re working with a recruiter, ask him or her for insight into the interview dress code. When in doubt, err on the conservative side and wear a suit, sport coat or blazer.

Don’t overdo it. You don’t want the most distinctive thing about you to be the scent of your cologne still lingering in interviewer’s office hours after you’ve left. Avoid overpowering fragrances; many people are sensitive — even allergic — to perfumes and colognes.

The same guidelines apply to makeup and jewelry. While these aspects of your wardrobe can allow you to express your personality, be judicious in your choices. Less is usually more.

Don’t forget about comfort. Most people are already nervous enough during the interview. Don’t increase your propensity to sweat by wearing a plastic skirt, like one individual cited in the survey.

Similarly, avoid wearing clothes that itch or constrict your movements. You want to exude confidence during an interview, not look like you have a rash or can’t breathe. A well-fitting outfit also can put you at ease.

Test-drive your clothing choices ahead of time to ensure everything fits well and makes you feel good about your appearance. This is especially important if it’s been awhile since you’ve donned your interview suit. Repair or replace anything that is torn or soiled.

Another tip: Dress in layers so you can be at ease regardless of the temperature. If you show up in Bermuda shorts, as one candidate referenced in the survey did, you might spend the whole meeting shivering under an air conditioning vent.

Don’t show too much skin. One job candidate we heard about arrived to the interview in a micro-miniskirt and fishnet stockings. Another wore a leather vest without a shirt underneath. If you want the job, avoid attire that is more fitting for the club than the office. Midriff-baring T-shirts, low-rise pants or mini-anything should be shoved back in the closet.

Don’t avoid the mirror. Conduct a final head-to-toe assessment before leaving the house to ensure that everything – including your hair, nails and shoes – is presentable. Do the same when you get to the interviewer’s office. A quick trip to the restroom will allow you to make final adjustments before meeting with the hiring manager.

Remember, when it comes to attire, simple is best. What you wear won’t get you the job, but it may take you out of the running. In the end, it’s best to focus attention on your abilities, not your favorite funky shirt, shoes or skirt.
